(Here’s the secret!)
Make room
Lay out all the clothing your child wears on a bed or another large surface. It’s the best way to evaluate what still fits, what is worn or stained, and which pieces your child will need next.
You’ll also get a good sense of the colours and styles your child prefers.
Even early on, it is easy to tell when a child is sensitive to certain fabrics, needs hardier textiles, or prefers roomy clothing that lets them move.
Make notes
Grab our downloadable form and use it as a snapshot of your child’s clothing needs. It includes….
Lifestyle Categories like Home, School, Casual, Formal, and Activities (dance, sporting gear, travel)
Types of clothing (undergarments, tops and bottoms, dresses, shoes and socks)
Adorable extras that may turn your list into a treasured time capsule!
Just record the number of pieces your child needs under each column, taking into consideration your family’s lifestyle and laundry habits.
Hang onto the form or save a picture on your phone to keep the info handy.
The kids’ capsule concept can help you develop a reliable wardrobe for each child based on temperament, personal preferences, flattering fit and colours, and of course, growth spurts. Consider seasonal items–swim suit or sweaters? Do you prefer minimalism, with several sturdy pieces that hold up to frequent laundering? Or will you go a larger selection of lightweight garments that don’t need to be washed and worn every week?
A great kids’ capsule works as well for your child as it does for you.
Sort
Separate your child’s clothing into piles that match the columns on your list.
Pull out any pieces you can sell, share, or discard.
Now you can see clearly what you need to complete your child’s wardrobe.
This is where the beauty of the capsule comes into play.
Plan to work with 2-3 colours that look great on your child, and that coordinate with existing basics.
Evaluate the list frequently twice a year, or more often, if your child is going through a growth spurt. The rule of thumb is that anytime you remove a piece of clothing from the capsule, you replace it.
The rules aren’t hard and fast. Update your capsule list as your child changes size, hobbies, or interests.
Keep it simple
Capsule wardrobes simplify getting dressed for your child and you because clothing is pre-coordinated.
Kids may not know what you’re doing, but this system makes it easy for them to keep drawers and closets tidy. When they’re much older and figure out what you were doing, they’ll think you were a genius.
Make a mood board or create a wishlist
Did you know that you can use your Sandbox online account as a Wishlist?
Just create an account or login, then hop on the Registry tab and Create A Registry. Our “registries” have lots of uses for busy parents!
You can name, describe, and make your list shareable or private. We recommend making a title with your child’s name and age.
Now just select an item, click Quick View, and Select Options. Plug in the size you want and Add to Registry. It’s that simple!
You can find a saved mood board or wishlist under your Sandbox account credentials–top right corner of the home page.
